Separation is hard. We help you understand your rights and reach practical arrangements for children and property, with as little conflict and cost as possible.
How we help
We advise on separation, divorce, parenting arrangements and property settlement. Where your visa depends on your relationship, we look at your migration position at the same time, so one decision doesn’t create a problem in the other.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. For married couples, property applications generally need to be made within 12 months of a divorce order taking effect. For de facto couples, generally within 2 years of separation. Get advice early so you don’t miss these limits.
In most parenting matters you need to attempt family dispute resolution (mediation) first. There are exceptions, including where there is family violence or urgency.
Often, yes. Many families reach agreement through negotiation or mediation. Agreements can be made formal through consent orders or a financial agreement.
Separation can affect your visa. In some situations, including where you have experienced family violence, you may still be able to continue. Get advice promptly. You may need to tell the Department about the change, and we can help you do that properly.
Any court documents, a summary of your assets and debts, details of the children’s current arrangements, and any visa documents if your visa is linked to the relationship.
